A recent college admissions scandal in the United States, which revealed that wealthy parents had bribed officials at elite universities, exposed the price some people are willing to pay to say, “I went to an Ivy League school.” In a country where the myth of academic meritocracy persists despite plenty of evidence to the contrary, many people were shocked to learn that the education system was rife with illegal and unethical conduct.
On Sunday Rakesh Sharma, director of Final Solution, the acclaimed documentary on the Gujarat riots of 2002, released a dozen clips online that were not part of the original two-and-a-half-hour version of the film. The film severely indicts Narendra Modi, the state's chief minister and the Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate.
After written appeals by filmmakers, authors, scientists and theatre artistes, it’s now the turn of celebrities, mainly members of the Hindi film fraternity, to take to short videos to urge people to vote with care and concern for the country and its people. ‘Vote Sambhal Ke’ (Guard your vote), is the implicit advice. The two-to-three minute-long videos, up on YouTube, have been directed and edited by former journalist turned scriptwriter-filmmaker Satyen K. Bordoloi.
Siliguri: Bengal government employees requisitioned for the coming Lok Sabha polls have threatened to skip election duty unless every polling booth is manned by Central security forces. In several places in North Dinjapur districts in north Bengal such employees today briefly stalled poll duty training sessions and said that they will not go to the polling booths unless the authorities ensure deployment of Central forces.
The Opposition parties in West Bengal, in a meeting with the Election Commission of India full bench on Thursday, demanded heavy deployment of Central forces in the state during the upcoming Lok Sabha polls to ensure a free and fair election. The political parties also demanded that the Central forces should not be kept under the control of State police officials as “they act as per orders of the TMC leaders”. The full bench of the ECI, led by Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora, met representatives of various political parties here.
Kolkata, April 6 (IANS) Demanding deployment of Central forces at polling stations for their security, polling officials across districts in West Bengal on Saturday threatened not to take part in the electoral process without Central troopers. A group of polling officials organised protests in Coochbehar, Howrah and South Kolkata as they are “afraid” of their security following the death of a poll official, Rajkumar Ray, whose body was found on train track near north Bengal’s Raiganj station during last year’s panchayat election. “If we do not get the assurance of Central force deployment, we will not go to the polling booths. We are not protesting on behalf of any party, but for our lives,” said a protesting member at Coochbehar.

ver 1,500 government employees on Tuesday threatened to skip poll duty in the Raiganj Lok Sabha seat if central forces were not deployed at each booth, with many of the staff walking out of pre-election training sessions to make the demand. The 1,500 staff make up around 15 per cent of the 10,000 required for the 2,000-odd booths. The protesters have cited the case of a teacher found dead under mysterious circumstances during last year’s rural polls in which he was a presiding officer.

Several incidents of violence, claiming 12 lives, were reported from across 20 districts of West Bengal amidst panchayat elections in the state, on Monday. The violence, which began with killing of two activists of Communist Party of India (Marxist) in South 24 Parganas district, spread to other parts of the state as the polling commenced. The polls were rescheduled to be held on May 14, following the verdict by the Calcutta High Court. The Supreme Court also, in its observation, had expressed concern after the ruling Trinamool Congres (TMC) ended up winning 34 per cent panchayat seats unopposed.
Last Saturday, the Election Commission of West Bengal (India) Amarendra Singh held a meeting of election observers at Sisir Manch in Kolkata. Singh was exasperated. “Total anarchy going on in the state,” he told his colleagues. He detailed at least “six incidents of anarchy from across the state.” When a man like Singh uses the word “anarchy,” he means mayhem and disorder. It is a stiff word to use. It refers to the fact that the state administration has lost control of the streets. West Bengal, which is governed by the Trinamul Congress (TMC), is to hold local body elections in 42,000 seats across this state of 91 million people. These elections are to be held in the first week of May. Across the state, as opposition candidates went to file their nomination papers, thugs associated with the TMC beat them and denied them this basic democratic right—to run for elections.
Apprehending a deterioration in law and order conditions in the poll-bound districts of North Bengal, thousands of poll personnel have started writing to the Chief Election Officer of West Bengal, Deputy Election Commissioner in charge of West Bengal and even have lodged complaints to the ECI, seeking immediate deployment of Central Forces. They have also threatened to pull off from their election duty unless adequate Central Forces are deployed to man all the polling stations of these districts.

She told PTI that there had been speculation about whether the party would field someone who has crossed the 75-year age bar. On Thursday, BJP chief Amit Shah had told The Week magazine that it was his party’s decision not to give Lok Sabha poll tickets to those above 75 years of age even though he did not named Mahajan.

On March 14, IIT Kanpur said it may revoke Saderla’s PhD on ground of ‘plagiarism’. The university’s Senate recommended the revocation even though the Academic Ethics Cell had found “no reason to revoke the thesis”.

Another group from the police, she said, raided her house in Sarojini Nagar, where she lives with her parents.

NEW DELHI — In August 2013, as Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) laid the groundwork for his wildly successful run for Prime Minister in the 2014 Indian election, his campaign research advisor Prashant Kishor suggested they start a women’s empowerment NGO as part of a discreet voter outreach programme. For Modi, Kishor’s job was to use voter data and poll research to professionalise the BJP’s ground game and its online presence on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp.
